Who Provides Endodontic Treatment?

Endodontic treatment, is also known as root canal treatment, is one that aims to treat the soft pulp tissue within the tooth. An Endodontist is a dentist who specializes in doing this.

Endodontists become specialists by completing two or more years of advanced specialty training in endodontics after finishing dental school. Hence, they can provide both general and specialized dental care. They provide both routines and difficult, very complex endodontic procedures, such as root canal treatment, endodontic surgery, and special teeth-saving procedures after traumatic dental injuries. They use both advanced technologies and specialized techniques to give them a full and very accurate view of the inside of a tooth, thus allowing them to provide treatment quickly and comfortably.

When Would I Need An Endodontist?

When you have the symptoms described below, then you may need to call an endodontist:

  • Tooth pain that lingers for a long time.
  • Unexplained pain in your jaw or your mouth.
  • Having sensitive teeth to heat, cold and sweet foods.
  • Mild or severe inflammation near the affected teeth or gums.

Other causes of tooth pain, like a tooth abscess can serve as a serious threat to your health in general if left untreated or not treated long enough. You’re advised to seek immediate treatment if you suffer an injury to your mouth via trauma or you experience or exude signs of infection, such as Fever, difficulty breathing or swallowing, redness, or swelling in your mouth.

Tooth Pulp

The Tooth pulp refers to the neurovascular supply feeding the teeth. That is the nerves, blood vessels, and other tissues deep inside each tooth. The pulp, or connective tissue inside teeth, plays an important role in helping children’s teeth develop as they grow.

Tooth decay or a cracked tooth can lead to pulpitis (an inflamed or infected tooth pulp), which often causes tooth pain and sometimes lead to serious health problems requiring urgent dental attention.

Treatments Endodontists Provide.

Endodontists primarily treat both tooth’s pulp or root tissues that have become damaged from some of the causes below:

  • Tooth decay from an untreated cavity due to plaque that damages a tooth’s root tissues.
  • A tooth abscess, which is a buildup of pus that forms when bacteria get inside your tooth or gums.
  • Tooth injuries due to trauma
  • A cracked tooth, when a crack extends to a tooth’s pulp tissue.

What Is A Root Canal And How Is It Done?

During treatment of a root canal, your endodontist will remove diseased or wounded pulp tissue, and removing inflamed or infected tissue can alleviate tooth pain. It can furthermore get rid of bacteria that could cause additional damage (to your tooth and the rest of your body). Endodontists use an operating microscope and intricate tools to rectify tissues inside a tooth. During root canal surgery, you are expected to lie on your back in a comfortable chair, after which you’d receive local anesthesia to numb the inside of your mouth to provide comfort.

Next, your Endodontist will place a dental dam over your tooth to isolate the affected area and protect your mouth, such as from infection. They then create access into the pulp tissue from the top or behind your affected tooth and remove damaged or diseased pulp tissue.

They complete this process by cleaning and disinfecting the area inside the tooth by filling and sealing it.
